Even if you live in Honolulu, Miami, or LA, Christmas is a time of special memories. The family gathering around the Christmas tree to a sing-along with Mitch Miller. A child proudly placing a hand-made ornament on the tree. The mystery of Santa arriving while the children are nestled in their beds.
One of my favorite Christmas memories is going with my grandfather into the woods to select a Christmas tree. The old man in a red plaid coat and a big belly that made him look like Santa himself, shouldering a sharp axe, me in boots that couldn’t keep out the freshly fallen snow. The dog running to and from in the snow. We found the tree. It was taller than me and granddad choped down. I was too small to lift the axe anyway, but I could drag it home. My fingers and toes were so cold they stung, but it was all worth it when we arrived back at the house. Grandmother greeted me with a cup of hot chocolate and everyone said, “Well done!”
