Norway lies along the western side of the Scandinavian peninsula extending more than 1,100 miles from south to north across the Arctic Circle. The west coast is dominated by mountains and fjords, or small inlets of the North Sea.
One such fjord is Sykkylven, noted for its recreational fishing, along with the majestic Sunnmøre Alps, with its summer hiking and winter sports. A small community took root here as far back as the Stone Age. Traditionally, this area supported small farms perched along the water or nestled in the steep mountain valleys.
Building Stressless recliners was the outcome of lineage rights. Second sons, who would not inherit the family farm, were left with no way to provide for families of their own. They took their place in stride and learned another way. They became designers and engineers, played with art and science and, by necessity, mastered the clean, streamlined and functional designs iconic to Norwegian home décor.
Stressless recliners – designed and made in Norway
Furniture shops popped up along the fjord where Sykkylven sits turning the farm community into the heart of Norwegian furniture manufacturing. Today, Stressless and the little community of Ikornnes, is world renowned for building the ultimate in comfortable recliners.
